When the team receives a minor penalty, the player must sit in the penalty box for two minutes and the team is short one player. If the other teams score within the two minutes then the player can leave the box and the team can again put five players on the ice.

If the team receives a major penalty (5 or 10 minutes) That player must sit in the penalty box for that amount of time and when the time expires the player must wait for a stoppage of play before returning to there team. If a player receives a major and minor penalty, a teammate must sit in the box for the minor penalty.

There are seven types of penalties, they are as followed.

1 -Minor: 2 minutes. This is when the player does one of the below infractions.

2 -Bench minor: 2 minutes. This is called when the coach is at fault. For example if there are too many players on the ice or the coach yells something at the referee.

3 -Major: 5 minutes. You will receive 5 minutes for fighting, hitting from behind, or if the referee thinks the player attempts to injure another player it will be called.

4 -Misconduct: 10 minutes. You will receive 10 minutes for yelling at the referee and not going directly to the box or off the ice. Throwing equipment on the ice while the game is in play.

5 -Game misconduct: Gone for the whole game. Making extreme gestures toward the referee or your opponent and continuing being involved in misconducts.

6 -Gross misconduct: You can't play until the authority deals with the incident. You will receive this for attempting to injure the official, kicking, or causing serious injury.

7 -penalty shot: A player is allowed to go in all alone and take one shot at the goalie. A penalty shot is awarded when a member of your team is tripped or hooked down on a breakaway, if the goalie pushes the net off or if a stick is thrown.

There are a few other rules you must follow they are offside and icing.

Offside is when a player crosses the other teams blueline before the puck does. The play will stop and there will be a face-off just outside the blue line. If the player crosses the blue line but comes back out before the player with the puck crosses the line it is ok.

Icing is when the puck is shot from your side of center and crosses the opponents goal line without a player touching it. This will result in a stoppage of play and a face-off back in the team zone who iced the puck.
