Golf’s
origin hasn’t been found, but we do know that golf has been
around for hundreds of years. The Romans played a game that was
similar to golf by hitting a ball that was feather stuffed and
using sticks
that were the same shape as golf clubs. People in Holland played
a game that is similar to golf on their frozen canals in the 15th
century.
In 1457 the game
of golf was banned because it interfered with the game of archery,
which was vital to the defense effort. So after awhile the Scottish
people decided to fight Parliament and the church by playing the game
of golf on seaside courses called links.
In 1873
the first official permanent golf club in North America and Canada’s
Royal Montreal Club was established. One of
the oldest golf clubs in the United States
called St. Andrew’s , was
established in 1888 at Yonkers, New York. Over
the next few years several 6 – 12 hole
courses were opened across the country. In 1893
the first 18
hole golf
course was
opened in Wheaton,
Illinois.
