BASE stands for the locations that BASE jumping is usually done from, Building, Antennae, Span (bridges), and Earth (cliffs). BASE is one of the most dangerous and extreme of the extreme sports, as there is very little room for any error, whether on the part of equipment or the jumper. There have been 84 BASE jumping related deaths since 1981. BASE can be done almost anywhere, as long as the “launch point” is high enough, and there is enough room below to safely land.

The Equipment

BASE jumping got its roots in skydiving, as it uses much of the same equipment. Essentially, all the equipment is the same as skydiving, as BASE jumpers also wear the helmets, goggles, and parachutes. However, the parachute for BASE jumping has improved upon the original skydiving parachutes used when the sport was starting. BASE parachutes are designed to open much quicker, as the fall can last as little as 6 or 7 seconds for the more experienced jumpers.
