Verbal Communication

What you GOTTA know:

Can you tell me the story of the Tower of Babel?   What were the first forms of writing?
Which is the oldest language?    How is verbal communication important in the present times?
Can you give me some examples of influential verbal communication in history?   How was verbal communication important in early history?

Which is the oldest language?

There is no such thing as the world's oldest spoken language; they are all derivatives from the beginnings of human speech. However, the oldest language to have been written is Sumerian. The Sumerians, a civilization that flourished in the territory of what is present day Iraq, are believed to be the creators of writing. Very shortly after, the Egyptians began to use writing. Other ancient languages to be written down in the past are Hebrew, Phoenician, Greek, Etruscan and Latin.

Can you tell me the story of the Tower of Babel?

This Biblical story clearly confirms the importance of communication. The Babel Tower, which was done by a group of united people in the kingdom of Babylon, was built in order for humankind to reach the heavens. God, who did not want this, made them each speak a different language, halting construction completely. After some time, the people went to a different part of the Earth, where they would each begin their own race. This story clearly shows how important Verbal Communication is, so important the construction of an immense project needed to stop.

How was verbal communication important in early history?

Historians have come up with eight hallmarks that a group of people must have had to be considered a civilization. One such hallmark is a form of writing mainly for governing purposes, though it was also used for pleasure. Not only was the writing used for administrative purposes, but also for literature, poetry, religion, and manuals of instruction.

What were the first forms of writing?

For example, the ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphics, picture symbols that stood for words, syllables, or sounds. They wrote on papyrus, which was made from the reeds grown by the Nile. The Mesopotamians were also one of the first people to develop their own writing, now known as cuneiform. An important historical document known as the Law Code of Hammurabi, was written in cuneiform.

Look at the world around you; everyone would be lost without the instruction given in manuals and the directions given on road signs. In this day of high technology, everything must be made user-friendly by coming with simplified instructions. Computers, telephones, microwaves, televisions, Discmans, iPods, and other devices all come with manuals to teach customers how to use the products effectively.
