Hi, I’m Mrs. Peters and my day job is teacher of English and Computer Studies at Lower Canada College. In some of my spare time, I’m a graduate student of Concordia University in Educational Technology. I have finished all the courses for my master’s degree and now I have the difficult task of writing my thesis. Maybe someday someone will even read it!

My favourite books are novels and are usually mysteries and fantasies or science fiction that have a spiritual theme. For example, I really love the novels of Madeleine L’Engle, C.S. Lewis and Lois Lowry. I also like to read witty comedies just for fun and a little levity. The courses I most enjoyed in university were about how people learn and how best to design a course for learners.

It’s hard to say what my favourite tech toy is. I have a Palm Tungsten that I use to store data, record voice messages, play games, upload Internet news and more I haven’t yet explored. As well, I also like my digital camera, my flash drive, and my computers…. But I don’t have an iPod yet. I just don’t listen to music enough to justify that expense.

The food I enjoy most at the school dining hall are the fresh-made soups made by our cooks every day – except for Cream of Celery!
The quiches are pretty good too!

If you looked into my sports bag, you would find my bathing suit and other swim paraphernalia. I also enjoy walking, cycling and hiking. While I am not exactly a competitive athlete, I do enjoy watching LCC’s athletes perform at the school’s competitive games.

Montreal is the fashion and clothing design centre of North America. I find Montrealers tend to dress with great chic and sophistication. As for me, if I have to dress up for work or an outing, the first concern is comfort. At home, the first thing I reach for are my comfy sweatpants and fleece shirts.

Recently, I had to shop for a new backpack that would carry my laptop and everything else in my life. I wanted to avoid the obvious laptop case because it wouldn’t have enough room for everything I needed and it screams “Hey everybody! Laptop inside!”. These days, laptops are the favourite pick of thieves. I went to a few shops before settling on a backpack by High Sierra. The owner of the shop, who carried many brands, did a great sales job on me. The interesting thing about his pitch is that the High Sierra brand packs the best value as well as best features. I later went back to the same shop to buy another kind of High Sierra for my youngest daughter who needed a new bag. Earlier in the summer, my oldest daughter picked out a Jansport sling-type bag that she really liked. She liked it at first, but now the Velcro on the shoulder strap is driving her crazy because it seems to catch on all her clothing as she takes it on and off.

We have the privilege of living in a developed country which is prosperous and peaceful. Roughly two-thirds of the world’s population is not so blessed. Sharing our prosperity with those who are in need is not just a choice, but a responsibility. Several years ago, through an organization helped established by some friends from our church, our family was matched with a young girl and her family in Iraqi Kurdistan - through the Kurdistan Children's Fund. We provide monthly financial support which is used to help with her education and needs. Recently, I met a family of Americans who gave up the good life in North America to live in one of the poorest regions of Romania in order to work as relief workers to the suffering people there. Our school is not only supporting a young orphan girl in Ethopia, but we are also raising money and operating a food bank for Dans La Rue which aids the homeless kids on our own streets of Montreal. These actions demonstrate that a good education is not just about memorizing facts and formulae, getting good grades, and playing on sports teams; a good education is being informed about the needs of the developing nations and taking action for a better tomorrow for everyone.

Non nobis solum.
