To some people, a quilt typically is used as comforter on cold nights. but to the people who made them, they often think of them a masterpieces and to others they can tell stories. People's thoughts about quilts vary greatly and none of them are incorrect. How this type of coverlet came to be is simple; people needed to be warmer during the night. Long ago, whatever cloth was available was usually made into clothes for the family. So, to make a quilt, the women would get scraps and arrange them in a way of a pattern or a way of being fair to the eyes. As the years went by, textile plants opened and provided women with more cloth. Still, most of it went to making clothing and quilts continued to be made the same way. Nowadays, they are made with new cloth. Occassionally, one might be make from scrap cloth.

Quilts have no absolute style. However, they do vary from culture to culture. An example is American and English quilts. The English quilt may have more of a "European" taste to it, as for American quilts, they have a bit of English here and some African there. Or in other words, American quilts have more of a "melting pot" style rather than the English. But, one of the better things is that it doesn't matter how you make it.
