Football Story
This is the story of a young man named Mike Winchell. He was the quarterback of a football team. This team wasn’t your ordinary team. This team was known for winning the state pennant. We were the Carter Cowboys in Texas. His team was undefeated in his junior year of high school and won it all and now he is a senior looking for his second in a row. He and his family are looking for a full football scholarship. “ when we’re talking full scholarship I’m looking for a state win” said one of the college recruiters. Mike said “Well, since you’re talking scholarship I’ll let you know that my team won last year”. The recruiter was impressed. He said “ you have to do it again in order to get my scholarship.” Mike was getting excited about the upcoming year. He wasn’t only excited about himself, but he was looking forward to playing with a star running back named Bobbie Miles. He was known for being the fastest in the league. He could juke people and was the best kick and punt returner in the league.

It was almost time for their first practice. Their coach had said that whoever made the team wasn’t guaranteed to play, but will have to earn their spot on the team. Another all-state player was Julias Berteer. He played defensive end and was real good at it too. He had the record in the state for most sacks. He was known for hitting hard and always avoiding blocks. The last All-American player they had was Gary Cambell. He played middle linebacker. He was very aggressive and had hit the hardest on the team. He had the record for most forced fumbles and the most interceptions. He was by far the best linebacker in the country.

In the first game of the season was a blowout. Aaron had scored four rushing touchdowns in the game. Julias had eight sacks and had set a record for it. He had made one hit that I will always remember because he had knocked off the quarterbacks helmet and he fumbled. Luckily the middle linebacker, Gary Cambell had blitzed up the middle and had picked up the fumble and had ran it back for a touchdown. That game my team had won by 42 points 50 to 7.

After the game we had an awesome party at Bobbie's house. We had the best pizza ever and the greatest pie. We had played touch football game for fun while we were there. After that we went into the house and played Halo 2 on X-box.

The next week on Sunday we had another game in Houston. They were the Houston Rams. They had also won their first game by a blowout. This game, unlike the other one, was real close. They had the first touchdown in the game, it was on the kick return. But we couldn’t let this get to us. After they scored they tried to kick an onside kick, but we ended up with the ball. After that on the first play Mike threw a bomb to Archie Madison who had run a fly route to the end-zone and it was caught for a forty-eight-yard bomb. Then instead of just kicking the ball we went into shotgun formation and threw it in for two points. Now the score was 7-8 us. Then when we kicked it off we decided to do a squib kick meaning kicking it on the ground so wherever the ball goes it will be unpredictable. They ended up with the ball on the twenty-seven yard line. Now we were on defense and didn’t know what to do. So we decided to play a safe zone, defense meaning to protect against the pass. They ended up running the ball for about fifteen yards. Then we realized that they had a better running game than their passing game, but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t pass. The next play they threw the ball for a Twenty yard pass. Now they were in our end of the field. The next play they did a double reverse pass and caught us off guard and scored on a 30 yard pass from their wide receiver to their quarterback and just like that the score was 14-8 them. Then they kicked off with about a minute thirty left on the clock. We received doing the triangle meaning that we were going to do a reverse to either side of the field, but something went terribly wrong and we fumbled while doing the hand-off and they picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown. Now it was the half. During the half time pep-talk the coach said that the game wasn’t over unless we wanted it to be, but of course we wanted to play some football. We came out of the half pumped up and ready to win the game. We were going to receive the ball in the second half. We just did a normal kick return right up the middle, but it was more than than just, that we ran it back for a touchdown. This started our momentum. When they received they got it to the fifteen yard line. After they received the ball Julias got a sack on the quarterback for a seven yard loss. The next play, they went into shotgun formation so we audibled into dime formation to protect against the pass. They threw the ball and Gary ended up intercepting the ball on their thirty-seven yard line. After that we ran a toss right to Aaron and he ran the ball in for a touchdown. After that we had so much momentum that after that score we were unstoppable. Now we knew for sure never to give up anymore. This game brought us very much pride.

After this game we went on a winning streak winning game after game all the way to the championship.

In the championship game we played the Houston Rams again. They weren’t planning on losing to us again. During this game it showed why the all-state players were all state and why the All-American is All-American. During this game it started out the same as the other one. They scored first, but not on the kick return. They had ran it for twenty yards before they got chased down and stopped at the forty-two yard line. Then they through a fifty eight yard pass all the way in our end-zone for a touchdown. We knew we could get that back though. On the kick return we tried the fake double reverse and Bobbie had ran it for ninety-five yards and in for a touchdown. Now it was the two minute warning in the first half. We had the ball and threw a flat pass to Bobbie when their linebacker came out of nowhere and had hit him in the knee and he flipped. Their crowd was in the air with joy. Our crowd was in the air, but for sympathy. Bobbie was still on the ground hurt. The team medical doctor came on the field. He came back to the bench and he said it wasn’t looking good, he said that Bobbie had a torn ACL. The stadium got silent and I knew that I was going in the game. This was the first game that I was going in. I got real nervous. Our coach called a time out. He said to me “son, it’s all up to you, without a running back that is confident we can’t win”. I said ”I can do it coach”. Then we all paused and the coach called the play. We came out of the huttle fierce and ready to play. The coach had called a thirty two blast which was going to me right up the middle. There was a minute forty five left on the clock in the fourth quarter. We were down by 3 points 17-14. I ran for about ten yards to get a first down. Then the coach told Mike to run a wide receiver slant and running back fly. Hike! The quarter back called Hike I sprinted down the field and towards the end-zone. Mike lofted the ball towards the end-zone when the buzzer sounded I sprinted for it then I dove for it and I landed on the ground I looked down and I had the pigskin between my hands and on my stomach. I had done it I caught the ball and won the game!!!!!!
