In order to play any sport, you need some kind of equipment. Whether it is a uniform or a helmet, you need to have some (though you have the possibility to play some sports with out anything, like running, if you wanted to, you could run without the need of anything.)

The first baseman's glove is longer, wider, and has no individual fingers. This helps it to catch more wild throws to first base. The catchers glove has extra thick padding, the last three fingers are all in one finger slot designed for it, with the index finger getting its own slot. The outer brim of the fingers (excluding the net) are super thick. This is so that when the ball is pitched to him, it won't bounce out of the glove because the padding makes a wall trapping the ball.
