The first motion pictures were made in the early 1880's by Thomas Edison in New Jersey, and for the first 15 years of movie making history, the New York/New Jersey area dominated the industry. Now, Hollywood is most famous for it's role in the film industry. With the birth of film and cinemas, awards such as the Academy Awards also began to honor achievements in filmaking.
