Holidays In the US


At the start of the year (January 1st) we have New Year’s Eve. At midnight on that night we shoot fireworks and watch a ball drop on TV. We get 2 days off for this holiday. It’s only 2 days because it’s a continuation of Christmas break.

Christmas is one of the most joyous holidays around the world. For Christmas a Man named Santa Claus comes down your chimney and gives presents. Christmas is Christian celebration. Many people decorate a tree with a bunch of lights and ornaments.


Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. It is celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January; its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili, a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language.


Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights, starting on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar (which is November-December on the calendar most of us use). In Hebrew, the word "Hanukkah" means "dedication." You light 1 candle a day on a menorah. The children play a game called Dradle.


On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from Britain and Democracy was born. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. On 4th of July we shoot fire works for fun, and have family picnics and other events..


Halloween is celebrated on October 31. Children we go out Trick or Treating. They dress up in costumes and knock on peoples doors. The people then give the children candy.


Veteran's Day is celebrated on November 11th each year. After World War 1 (November 11, 1918) ended and the treaty of Versailles was signed. Our government declared this as a day to remember the sacrifices made by our veterans.


Each year on the third Monday of January schools, federal offices, post office and banks across America close as we celebrate the birth, the life and the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King fought against prejudice and racism in our country.
