Water In Our Community

Water is a vital part of life in Port Dover and the world. It's more than just washing, cleaning and bathing. We're made up of 75% water, for your information! Without water, we couldn't survive.

Port Dover used to have the largest fishing fleet in the world, but now we're stuck in the shadows of a once thriving fishing industry. A failure to our community, all because we over fishe.00d Lake Erie and the pollution of the lake was on the increase. Not just a pop can, or a hot dog, but so many other things included. It's only a little trash... Wrong! Do you know how many people say that, probably 6 million!

Some electricity is even is created by the flow of water. Our supply of electricity come from Niagara Falls and the Niagara River which is close by. It joins Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It is one of the world's greatest sources of hydroelectric power. During its course of 56 km, the river drops over 99 metres. Today the churning river provides the driving force for almost 2 million kilowatts of electricity from a number of power plants on the Canadian side. The three largest are Sir Adam Beck Niagara Generating Station Nos. 1 and 2 and the nearby pumping-generating station. On the American side of the border, down river from the Falls, the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant and the Lewiston Pump Generating Plant, together generate more than 2.4 million kilowatts of electricity. The electricity from the Niagara River is enough to power 45 million 100-watt lightbulbs.
