Canadian Ice Storm of 1998

What is Freezing Rain?

Freezing rain is supercooled water droplets that freeze on impact with another object. It occurs when snow comes to a warm area in the air it is falling through. The snow then melts, and becomes rain, then the rain encounters cold air, but does not quite freeze. Instead the rain "supercools", enabling it to become a layer of ice when it hits the ground or another surface.

What Can Freezing Rain Do?

Freezing rain can cause long power outages by destroying or knocking over telephone lines. It can also make going outside of your house either by foot or by car extremely hazardous. You are more prone to serious car accidents after freezing rain has fallen because of the icy state of the roads.

What To Do In a Situation Of Freezing Rain

  • Stay in one place if it is possible
  • If you have to drive, use caution, and try to only drive on roads that have been previously salted or sanded.
  • If freezing rain is soon expected to hit your area or neighborhood, be prepared by buying extra supplies such as candles, blankets, and extra food.
